—Overview of the event—

Coaching has always been a powerful way to support leaders through change and transition. However, the level of change and uncertainty being faced by leaders today is greater than ever before. This session shares some of the trends being noticed amongst leaders at this time, along with suggestions for further discussion around effective coaching interventions.

—About the Speaker—

Tracy Sinclair is a Master Certified Coach (MCC) with the International Coaching Federation (ICF). She is also, a trained Coaching Supervisor, Mentor Coach and ICF Assessor. Tracy trains coaches and works with managers and leaders to develop their coaching capability. She works as an international Corporate Executive and Board Level Coach, a leadership development designer and facilitator working with a wide range of organisations. Tracy also specialises in working with organisations to support them develop coaching culture.

She was named as one of the Leading Global Coach winners of the Thinkers50 Marshall Goldsmith Awards of 2019. Tracy was the President of the UK ICF from 2013-2014 and has been an ICF Global Board Director since 2016, serving as Treasurer in 2017, Global Chair in 2018 and Immediate Past Global Chair in 2019. She currently serves as a Director at Large on the International Coaching Federation Global Enterprise Board.

Following the publication of his book, Leadership Agility, he has expanded his practice to include training hundreds of coaches in Leadership Agility Coaching and in how to use the Leadership Agility 360 and Leadership Agility Accelerator (self-assessment). He is the CEO of ChangeWise and is based in the Boston area.

The SCARF Model – How it affects agile teams

In the post ‘There Are Sabre-Toothed Tigers In Your Office‘, we discussed how our brains have evolved, and that the primal response that helped protect us from sabre-toothed tigers had changed. Our brains now see that same level of threat from domains of human social experience that we wouldn’t consider to be life or death situations. However, our brains react as if they are, releasing the same chemicals and in doing so depleting other parts of our brain of resources. 

This is bad news – because it is the other more evolved parts of our brain that we use most We rely on them to do our jobs well. When they are not functioning at 100% (because our brains Limbic System is responding to a perceived threat) our cognitive function is impacted in several ways:

  • We become poorer at complex and non-linear problem solving
  • We make more generalisations and come up with fewer options when problem solving
  • Are more likely to react defensively and treat small stressors as of they were big stressors
  • And are more likely to err on the safe side, be less innovative, creative or bold.

The 5 Domains of Human Social Experience in SCARF

David Rock coined the acronym SCARF to describe the 5 domains of human social experience that the brain perceives to be as dangerous as a sabre-toothed tiger running loose in our office: They are threats to our Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness and Fairness. 

While threats to these generate a negative ‘Threat’ response, the brain is also capable of responding to changes in these factors with a positive ‘Reward’ response. This means that we can take steps to both mitigate the negative impact and promote the positive. Unfortunately the threat response is more powerful and longer lasting than the award response, so the SCARF threats are more dangerous.

Leading SAFe ® – Certified SAFe ® Agilist – Scaled Agile Framework for Enterprise

During this two-day course, attendees gain the knowledge necessary to lead a Lean-Agile enterprise by leveraging the Scaled Agile Framework® (SAFe®) and its underlying principles derived from Lean, systems thinking, Agile development, product development flow, and DevOps.

Participants in the class gain insights into mastering Business Agility in order to thrive in the competitive market. They discuss how to establish team and technical agility and organise and re-organize around the flow of value. They also learn and practice the skills for supporting and executing PI Planning events and coordinating multiple Agile Release Trains (ARTs).

Explore the importance of adopting a customer-centric mindset and design thinking approach to agile product delivery. Learners also develop an understanding for implementing a Lean Portfolio Management function in their enterprise.

Attending the class prepares individuals to take the exam and become a Certified SAFe® Agilist.
